Laurel Falls – Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Tucked away amidst the splendor of Pigeon Forge lies a natural wonder that’s perfect for mid-life adventurers seeking an easy yet rewarding hiking experience.
Laurel Falls, one of the Great Smoky Mountains’ iconic waterfalls, promises an enjoyable trek with stunning views.
Discover Laurel Falls:
The Laurel Falls trail offers a picturesque 1.3-mile round-trip hike that even novice hikers can enjoy. This well-maintained paved path winds through the forest, treating you to glimpses of local wildlife and the peaceful sounds of nature. The main attraction, the falls themselves, cascade 80 feet down into a crystal-clear pool. It’s a sight that makes the journey well worth it.
Laurel Falls
The Laurel Falls trail surface is mostly paved as it winds up the side of the mountain. However, it is rough and uneven throughout the path. With short steep sections, the trail can be slightly dangerous in wet weather conditions so watch your step if you’re hiking in the rain. Portions of the trail also have steep drop-offs so wheelchairs and strollers are not ideal for the trail. Also, avoid climbing on rocks near the waterfall as many people have suffered injuries from the slippery rocks and algae that grow on them.
What to Wear and Pack:
To make the most of your adventure, be sure to dress comfortably and appropriately for the trail. Here are some suggestions:
Footwear: Opt for sturdy yet comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. The trail is paved, but good footwear will still provide better support and prevent any discomfort.
Clothing: Choose lightweight and breathable layers. Depending on the season, a light jacket might be handy, and don’t forget your sunglasses and a hat for sun protection.
Backpack Essentials: Pack a few essentials to ensure a smooth hike. Consider including:
- Water: Staying hydrated is key. Carry a reusable water bottle to quench your thirst along the way.
- Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, or trail mix are great for quick boosts.
- Camera: Capture the beauty of the falls and the trail.
- Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun’s rays.
- Bug Spray: Keep those pesky insects at bay.
- Small First Aid Kit: Just in case of minor mishaps.
Getting to Laurel Falls
From Pigeon Forge, follow these directions to reach Laurel Falls:

- Drive 3.5 miles to the trailhead, where there are parking areas on both sides of the road.
