Exploring the Historic Fort Boonesborough

One of the highlights of camping and history at Fort Boonesborough is exploring the historic fort itself. The fort, originally built by Daniel Boone and his men in 1775, offers a rich peek into the past.

As we wandered through the fort, we spoke with local artisans who were demonstrating old-time craftsmanship.

Additionally, we learned about surveying, spinning, and weaving, making it a fun and educational experience.

The fort also features a well-stocked gift shop where you can purchase unique items, including some handmade by the resident artisans.

Retired biochemist Harry G. Enoch has written extensively about the history of the area around Clark County, Kentucky, for the past 25 years. He and his wife, Clare, live four miles from Boonesborough.

This combination of history and modern convenience makes visiting the fort a memorable and enriching experience.

Learning and Leisure

The history buffs among us particularly enjoyed the historical markers scattered around the area.

Each marker provides detailed information about the fort’s past, adding depth to our understanding of early American history.

However, it wasn’t all about history. The grounds around the fort were blooming with beautiful flowers, adding a touch of natural beauty to our visit.

Camping and history at Fort Boonesborough is indeed the perfect getaway for those who enjoy learning while being surrounded by nature’s splendor.

Kentucky Off the Beaten Path®: A Guide to Unique Places (Off the Beaten Path Series)

Tired of the same old tourist traps? Whether you’re a visitor or a local looking for something different, let Kentucky Off the Beaten Path show you the Bluegrass State you never knew existed.

Hall’s on the River Restaurant

Of course, we had to try out a local restaurant while we were in the area.

Hands down, we HIGHLY recommend Hall’s on the River restaurant. And it’s located only a mile from the Fort Boonesborough State Park.

Not only was the food top knotch, but the restaurant has outdoor seating overlooking a tributary of the Kentucky River.

Tracing its roots back to 1781, Hall’s on the River is the home to unique local favorites served up with a big side of history. Hall’s story begins with Captain John Holder and Holders Tavern. Captain John Holder, Daniel Boone’s contemporary, was a defender during the siege of Fort Boonesborough, which took place one mile up-river from Hall’s current location. On this property, Captain Holder established a boatyard, a station, and Holders Tavern. Here, visitors would gather to enjoy downtime in a simple, yet relaxing environment.

Artisan Village in Berea

Just a short drive away, you’ll find Berea, Kentucky, known as the Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky. A visit to the Artisan Village in Berea is a must.

This charming village is filled with shops and studios where you can watch artisans at work.

Whether it’s pottery, jewelry, woodworking, or weaving, you’ll find beautiful handmade items that make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

The vibrant community of artists here showcases their talents, and you might even find yourself inspired to try a new craft.

Scenic Countryside and Horse Farms

Another delightful activity is taking a drive through the picturesque Kentucky countryside. The rolling hills and lush landscapes are dotted with some of the most beautiful horse farms you’ll ever see.

Secretariat: Triple Crown

Secretariat was the best-known and most beloved race horse of the twentieth century. In 1973 his legacy as the greatest horse of all time was permanently etched into the consciousness of the world when he won the Triple Crown.

Visitors can schedule tours of many of the local horse farms to get a glimpse into Kentucky’s rich equestrian heritage and the chance to see these magnificent grounds and horses up close.

The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum

During our trip, we also took the time to visit the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum, located about two hours north of Fort Boonesborough if you make the drive through the country, while seeing the horse farms – it’s well worth it.

Tips for Visiting the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum

The Ark Encounter features a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark, providing a fascinating experience with exhibits that bring the biblical story to life.

The Creation Museum complements the Ark with exhibits that explore the history of the world from a biblical perspective.

Both attractions offered a unique blend of education and inspiration, making the longer drive a worthwhile addition to our adventure.
