What is Boho?
Before we dive into the craft project, let’s take a moment to understand what boho style means.
Boho, or bohemian style, is characterized by a blend of various design elements, often drawing inspiration from different cultures and eras. This style embraces a relaxed, unconventional, and artistic approach to decor.
It incorporates natural materials, earthy tones, eclectic patterns, and a sense of freedom. In essence, it’s about celebrating individuality and infusing your living space with a sense of wanderlust and adventure.
Materials You’ll Need
To make your own boho-inspired fall wreath, gather the following materials:
- Wreath Base: You can use a grapevine wreath, a wooden hoop, or even a metal ring as your base. I chose a 14″ grapevine wreath from Hobby Lobby.
- Faux Fall Foliage: Choose an assortment of artificial autumn leaves, berries, or flowers. Opt for warm, earthy tones. I used the cream-colored fall leaf pics from Dollar Tree.
- Faux Fall Pumpkins/Berries/Small Signs/Word Cut-outs/etc.: Choose burlap, leather, or other earthy-toned adornments to add a focal point to the wreath. I used pumpkins from Dollar Tree.
- Natural Dried Florals & Grasses: Gather some decorative natural dried florals and grasses in a variety of textures, sizes, and colors. Amazon has a wide variety at very reasonable prices. These are the ones I used:
- Ribbon, Macrame or Jute Cord: To add a boho touch, consider using an earthy-tone ribbon, macrame or jute for hanging. I used jute string from Dollar Tree.
- Burlap Ribbon or Twine: These materials can be used to create bows and add a rustic feel to your wreath. I chose not to include a bow on this wreath, but you can add one to further the boho theme.
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: For attaching the various elements securely. If your wreath will hang directly in the sun, I recommend using more robust glue sticks, such as these. I LOVE my cordless glue gun! It is sooooo handy to not have to be bothered with a cord, especially when you’re trying to reach into tight spaces when making a wreath.
- Scissors/Wire Cutters: For cutting and trimming the materials as needed.
Now that you have all your supplies, it’s time to get creative and start crafting.
Steps to Create Your Boho Fall Wreath
- Prepare Your Workspace: Lay out all your materials and heat up your hot glue gun. Make sure you have a clean and organized workspace to work comfortably.
- Mock Up the Design: Lay out a rough design by placing the materials around your wreath prior to attaching the materials permanently. Staging the materials will give you a chance to make changes as you rearrange the items to better suit the design you want to create.
- Add Natural Dried Florals & Grasses: Tuck textured grasses and florals into the grapevine or whatever wreath base you use. I only used about half of this bundle of grasses.
- You can attach them to the wreath using hot glue or floral wire. If the stems are thin or flimsy, you can wrap them with floral tape. I also added some floral wire for more support. Add some feathers for a unique and boho touch to your wreath.
- Attach Fall Foliage: Attach your faux fall foliage mixed in with the natural grasses. Distribute the fall foliage around the wreath, mixing up the colors and shapes for a more eclectic look.
- Attach Adornments: Select a few specific adornments to use as a focal point of your wreath. This could be pumpkins, berries, a small sign, or a larger faux floral.
- Create a Bow: Cut a piece of burlap ribbon or twine and tie it into a bow. Secure it to the wreath using hot glue. You can place the bow at the top, side, or bottom of your wreath, depending on your preference.
- Hang with Macrame or Jute Cord: To give your wreath a truly boho look, cut a piece of macrame or jute cord, create a loop, and secure it to the top of your wreath with hot glue. This will be used for hanging your wreath.
- Final Touches: Add any extra elements you desire, like pinecones, acorns, or small decorative pieces. Be creative and let your personal style shine through.
Horizontal or Vertical?
Depending on the placement of your florals, grasses, and embellishments, your wreath may be more appealing hung vertically. Experiment with the design to see which direction it looks best prior to attaching your hanger.
Bonus Tips:
- Put the natural florals/grasses outside in the sun for 3-4 hours to allow them to expand and become fluffy.
- Add pics, larger florals, and adornments in odd numbers for a more visually appealing piece.
- Attach adornments, such as faux pumpkins, by inserting a piece of short floral wire into the bottom. Add a small amount of glue before inserting the floral stem for a stronger attachment.
- Gather natural florals, grasses, and adornments from around your area. I used some Sweet Gum pods and natural grasses for additional embellishments.
Incorporating Boho into Your Fall Decor
Now that your DIY boho fall wreath is ready, it’s time to incorporate it into your overall fall decor. Boho style can be easily integrated into your home’s seasonal design in various ways:
- Layered Textiles: Use cozy throws, patterned rugs, and mix-and-match cushions in your living spaces. Opt for natural and earthy materials like jute, linen, and cotton.
- Potted Plants: Bring nature indoors with an assortment of houseplants. Macrame hangers or woven baskets can add a boho flair to your greenery.
- Artistic Wall Decor: Hang unique and eclectic wall art, such as dreamcatchers, woven tapestries, and abstract paintings, to infuse your space with boho vibes.
- Warm Lighting: Incorporate soft, warm lighting with string lights, lanterns, and unique lampshades for a cozy atmosphere.
- Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to mix different patterns, textures, and colors. Boho style celebrates the beauty of diversity and individuality.
By following these tips and crafting your DIY boho fall wreath, you can easily infuse your living space with the spirit of the season and a touch of boho charm. Embrace the freedom of expression, connect with nature, and celebrate the warmth and magic of fall right in the comfort of your home. Happy crafting and decorating!
